Lost Causes

There will be weeks where your mind is mute and you are essentially an automaton walking around, entirely absorbed with the monotonous tasks at hand. You clean up, it gets messy again. You don’t think about it. Every once in a while though you snap out of it. What am I doing right now, why does my stomach hurt. What happens after I die? Would I prefer to go there instead? You stay up late at night - there’s not a reason for it except that your body is full of this toxic energy, expanding, screaming to escape. It needs to escape. You drink and it’s gone for a moment and then the next day you’re asking the same questions again: what am I doing, why does my stomach hurt? You need to clean, the flat got messy when you let yourself escape. Then you need to work - you can’t pay for this flat or this booze if you don’t work. You get home and you clean again, the dishes are dirty. A week goes by like this. Then you’re asking again: what if I died? Would that be any worse? But you can’t die. In the cosmic scale you don’t exist. You’re the little blip on the radar before it disappears. You didn’t exist for the entirety of time before you were born, you won’t exist for the entirety of time after you die. What’s wrong with a little holiday? Why are you in such a rush to get back home? Why are you even thinking about it? You just got here after all, and that was a very rare opportunity to say the least Hey, it’s not so bad. There’s trees and grass, and shrubs - you’ve never seen those before! How exotic. There’s food and drinks - what a bizarre notion that is! You’ll be in the warmth of your home soon enough, but why not explore a little first. Its cold and it’s freezing and it’s fucking freezing, and it’s hot and it’s too hot and it’s too too hot, and it hurts and it hurts and you’re sweating and you’re sick and you get pushed over. But you look outside and there’s trees and there’s grass and there’s shrubs. You’ve never seen it before. You’ll be in the warmth of your boom soon but why not explore a little first. Its an interesting place after all. What’s wrong with a little holiday?

"'Lost Causes' took a few extremely busy months to complete. The only time I had to work on music was either extremely early in the morning, or extremely late at night (both become the same thing at some point, of course). After releasing a couple of electronica-centric releases earlier in the year, I decided to change tack and focus on much denser, drone-oriented ambient textures instead. Each track was individually inspired by a different person or phenomenon. On the whole, the writing process was heavily inspired by the myriad obsessions I had during the time of writing: the traditional music of Turkey & Lebanon, the aktion-oriented art of Joseph Beuys & Hermann Nitsch, the sprawling canvasses of Rothko, Kiefer & Tobey, Spinoza’s monism, Hildegard von Bingen’s mysticism, Gregorian chant, the Spanish Civil War, European mystery plays and the autumnal Scottish landscape. I also had the real pleasure of collaborating with Austin Barnes, a good friend of mine, whose work I deeply admire. As such, “Lost Causes” is dedicated to everybody I interacted with over this busy period of my life (you know who you are) - thanks very much for everything!"
