about

ollieturbitt.tumblr.com

Ollie Turbitt is a composer, writer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Edinburgh, UK. As well as providing guitar and bass duties for a handful of local bands, he has pursued a fluctuating solo career in avant-garde exploration. Under the pseudonyms Oxhead, Sforza Gramsci, OJ Turbitt, Hermetic Gaze and others, his self-released cassettes, USBs and digital albums have aimed to express ideas of cultural memory and false consciousness through improvisation, sound collage, ambient textures, laptop experimentation and field recordings. Ollie also runs Dead Hound Records, which serves as a platform for both his own material and an increasing list of international experimental acts.

'The Enemy is Profit: Selected Electronic Works, 2017-2020' marks Ollie’s 21st birthday by compiling a ‘best-of’ of his electronic material in (almost) chronological order, beginning with his first serious experimental release as Oxhead and finishing around the first release of 2020 - ‘MMXX: Futurability Complex’. Representing the Oxhead, Sforza Gramsci, and Hermetic Gaze pseudonyms, and including some previously unreleased pieces, this compilation covers everything from ambient synth work to full-on harsh noise via sound collage, electronica and techno. All digital downloads of the full album include a remix of 'Guattari Cineplex' by Talla Dubh.

'in the last ten to fifteen years ... the internet and mobile telecommunications technology have altered the texture of everyday experience beyond all recognition. yet, perhaps because of all this, there’s an increasing sense that culture has lost the ability to grasp and articulate the present. or it could be that, in one very important sense, there is no present to grasp and articulate anymore'
