about

"Redeemer" is a suite of 3 inter-related guitar-based compositions by Ollie Turbitt. Track I presents the suite's "main theme": a free improvisation built around 2 guitar tracks and multi-layered drones. Tracks II and III are two long-form ambient pieces which deconstruct and expand the stems from the first piece, stretching and dissecting the original guitar samples into dense walls of ambient noise. Inspired in large part by Basinski, each piece intentionally degrades and disfigures the sounds of its predecessor. What begins as a legible and (mostly) melodic guitar piece ends up turning into a swirling expanse of sonic fog.

The movement of the suite from familiar sonic territory (ie more "conventional" guitar tones) towards ambient abstraction represents the inevitable entropic march into disorder. The album's title is inspired by the artist's readings of Buddhist, Islamic & Christian eschatology. Without giving direct reference to a specific religious figure, "Redeemer" is inspired in large part by the shared mystical concept of a spiritual opening at the end of a long period of apocalyptic disarray.

"all things are impermanent, all aspects of existence are unstable and non-eternal. beings will become so weary and disgusted with the constituent things that they will seek emancipation from them more quickly. there will come a season, o monks, when after hundreds of thousands of years, rains will cease. all seedlings, all vegetation, all plants, grasses and trees will dry up and cease to be..."
